greenlight the cranks...finally! jsr did pretty well this morning. about 7 fish in an hour and a half, still some 12"s and 13"s, but a few 16"s too. walleye were coming into the weedy/hump/shorelines in waves.  I hope this means things will continue to improve.

would have stayed out as the forecasted rain gets closer, but today is a busy day at work.  will be out at 5 tho, with a report and pics to follow.

in the meantime, enjoy this hilarious video of the loonies.  they did this for about 10 mins until literally, a third bird had to come and break it up.

UPDATE: Only went out from about an hour this afternoon. Wasn't too much goin on then, at least. Smalleyes only. Then I had a lil electrical issue to tend to in the Battleship...again. All is ok now, but this evening, I need a nap! Will be out in the am.

goin out here in a lil bit for a lunch break...and then back out later in the eve.

the upswing begins!  expecting some small ones today, and for things really to pick up tomorrow....thurs at the latest.  if anyone wants to go out between then and sunday's party, email me. lets get some fish in the freezers, already.

UPDATE:  OK, so my lunch break was a LIL long.  couldnt help it.  i was catchin fish!  no, nothing big...but at least fish!  about 5 12"ers in an hour and a half.  hopefully more (and more substantial) this evening.

UPDATE:  Well, still slow tonite...but still fish.  I got two 12's at the very end of the nite, and lost one 15" earlier.  I got mine on the JSRs, but I talked to two guides out there, and they both said that their equally impressive creels were comin off of jigs.

Fifteen cases of Mutt at the Lodge, fifteen cases of Mutt
Take one down, pass it around....

 AND....

If that doesn't get you excited about Sunday's fish fry, this will do the trick.  Here's a preview of some of JRN's music.

[Read report from this day in 2007: 05:52 PM]

JRN, August 26, 2008 - 11:06 AM:
Thanks Lar! First time I have heard my music on line! I wrote that song about a farm where I grew up near Fairchild WI when I was in the Marines stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Forrestal and feeling quite homesick. As you can tell by the chorus, fishing was always on my mind!

JTH, August 26, 2008 - 12:30 PM:
Good stuff, wish I could be there.

Fred, August 26, 2008 - 6:43 PM:
Can I sneak in a case of Linnies/

FALLGUY, August 26, 2008 - 11:24 PM:
THAT MUSIC IS GREAT, HAS ME SERIOUSLY THINKING ABOUT MAKING THE 5 HOUR DRIVE JUST TO BE THERE SUNDAY. I SURE WISH I LIVED CLOSER!!!

Derek, August 27, 2008 - 9:53 AM:
Nice work JRN. Can't wait to hear it live on Sunday. BTW, what guitar are you playin on that?

JRN, August 27, 2008 - 11:03 AM:
Thanks Derek, I play a Martin Hd28. Looking forward to playing for everyone!

Derek, August 27, 2008 - 12:41 PM:
Thought it sounded like a Martin. Gotta love the Hd28.

its that time of year.  im getting emails about water levels.  right now, we're down about two feet from full.  just the last couple days, my prop has noticed some "bumps" in the TMR trailer park channel (not the resort's).

Finally getting back up to Hayward again this weekend and I can't wait. I hear the bite is slow, but slow is so much better than no bite at all.

I was hoping to get up to the Flowage at least six times this summer. Sadly, this is trip No. 4, my first since the end of June.

Larry - the wife and I will be at our familiar spot in G6 jigging and slipping on Sunday afternoon. If you're bored, feel free to join us. Either way, a full report will be posted Tuesday morning.

Brett

lg3, August 25, 2008 - 4:40 PM:
on some days, "slow" has just been a nice way of saying "no bite". had back to back fronts, which should FINALLY be gone by the time u get here. Sunday is the fish fry (see banner above). Why don't you both come on over for that? ya cant fish ALL day!

Brett, August 26, 2008 - 12:54 PM:
I can't fish all day? Try me.

here's the pic of earlier's 14"s.  Greg Thelen and I got a few more this evening.. one 14", also four or five 12ers.  The crazy jig worked again for the one keeper walleye, but Greg's jig and crawler brought in all the other walleye, as well as a handful of bluegill, crappie and perch.

we fished the same hump I fished earlier.  tried a few others that sure seemed like they'd be just as "good", but couldnt find a thing at them.

still not finding the bigger fish.  oh well, as I mentioned to Greg, in the midst of a spell like this, there is satisfaction in finding ANYTHING.

more tomorrow

well, i finally found some anyway.  went out for about three hours, got about 5 walleye (12-14") and 5 crappie (7-11").  found a deep hump (13'/20').  I anchored against the windward side and caught fish goin around the base.  most all the fish came off of one particular side, where there was a brushpile/tree down there.  i was losing one jig after another....about 5 per fish...when I got smart.  not that this modified 1/16th 'n plastic will impress Derek (hey, maybe Fred), but this made it possible to wiggle it thru the wood, usually just by a soft bounce/lift.  anyway, thank God it did the trick today.   I got to remember what fish felt like!

as far as what fish felt like:  MY are they hitting light.  I was convinced i was dealing with bluegill or something down there, til I started bringing the walleye up.  couldnt tell the difference between crappie and walleye bites.  don't think I've ever felt em THAT wimpy.  they'd kiss it a few times, and you had to be lucky with your timing of setting that hook.  I missed a lot more fish than I caught.

anyway, more fishing and pics later.

UPDATE:   Frost Advisory for Sawyer County in effect until 8:00 AM CDT on August 25, 2008

p.s. MC, head back with the truck already.  The lodge is out of cigs and I'm now picking your garden for food to eat!  :)

To those of you that are having a tough time fishing up on the flowage, I'm not sure that fishing is really any better anywhere in the state right now. i was out this morning with my brother on Lake Tichigan. Dave caught 2 sheepshead and 2 catfish. I caught zip. Not a gamefish to be found.

lg3, August 24, 2008 - 4:26 PM:
but were the catfish on your barbie rod?

DancesWithWalleyes, August 24, 2008 - 4:37 PM:
So you do read the occasional I send. I figured you would post that one for everyone to see, just for the humor factor. By the way, we have a SpongeBob pole and a pirates of the Carribean pole for DWW Jr., no Barbie rods here.

Ive enlisted some help in finding the walleyes.  she's tryin her best, but if i can get her to introduce me to the loons...THEN we'll have ourselves a real nice poor man's aqua-vu:

we're now going into the third weather cycle since the walleye have bitten.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. We both know what you need to do Lar. Now stop being stubborn and tie on that green floating thunderstick, yes the one that tangles itself every other cast. That's if you have not tossed it yet. Ya know I don't remember seeing it in your tackle box back in July, lol.

Fred, August 23, 2008 - 3:35 PM:
Ditto lg3,five tough hours, did keep 3 from the "deep" on crawlers drifting 3 rods; sherrif & son limited on nice Crappies.

lg3, August 23, 2008 - 5:03 PM:
earlier, i was in 20' with plastics. i think i had one hit. the fredjig does it again!

lg3, August 23, 2008 - 6:14 PM:
DWW, tell ya what. Tonite, I'll try the "next closest thing" i have to it.

lg3, August 23, 2008 - 8:45 PM:
nite was no better. just got back. lost one 16"er at the boat. also had a biteoff (nice) that im assuming was a northern. rest of em were just crappies on jigs - they are goin strong, if you like the 9-10"ers.

Fred, August 23, 2008 - 9:06 PM:
p.s. during that marathon effort, considering the conditions, I think I boated every species except Musky, incl. the biggest Bullhead in 14 years, unless it was a Catfish! Did spend some time at Stump Bay weeds where most of the variety happened, incl 1 12" W

lg3, August 23, 2008 - 9:08 PM:
whats stump bay?

DancesWithWalleyes, August 23, 2008 - 9:26 PM:
What is the next best thing?

lg3, August 23, 2008 - 9:26 PM:
HJ10

DancesWithWalleyes, August 23, 2008 - 9:37 PM:
That's funny, I just picked up a few of those tonight at Gander Mtn, they had a coupon in the Milwaukee Journal. $10 in free merchandise with nothing elso to buy. The wife and I went and I picked up a few HJ 10's and some floating thundersticks.$20 in free lures, not a bad deal.

Fred, August 24, 2008 - 8:08 AM:
Lower righthand corner F5, northedge of the old Crane Creek bed; your back faces Horseshoe Bay with Sat. wind

lg3, August 24, 2008 - 9:38 AM:
DWW, you may have gotten that math by Ms. DWW, but not us.

DancesWithWalleyes, August 24, 2008 - 12:20 PM:

Then-Current Conditions - 81F / 27C | Light Rain - 7:53 PM CDT Aug. 22 | LRGRAF Forecast: 7

well, the forecast blew it today, for sure.  struggled to get those few this morning.  tonite, Greg and I couldnt match it.  a few smalleyes....and only one 13-14" in an hour and a half.  that was off of birch. .. released when we couldnt get any other fish to donate their lives to the fish fry.

this "rain" is supposed to pass overnite, and the wind shift is supposed to shift to "from the west".  I know that the predictor is gonna stay high tomorrow.  Just REALLY hoping the fishing catches up to it.

think im gonna relax here tonite...give Jas some time.  she got stung by a hornet earlier.  she yelped right when it got her.  i was kinda nervous, but there's no swelling, she's not payin any attention to it., she's as bitchy as ever, and i cant find a stinger... so i guess thats that.

anyway, ill be out in the AM.

Poor Jasmine! Rosie can feel her pain, she got into an entire hive last weekend. Poor dog had a swollen ear and a swollen leg. Plus numerous bites all over. She didn't act like herself for a few days. Give Jas a pat on the head and an extra treat for me.

lg3, August 22, 2008 - 9:22 PM:
oh she's had a few treats. amazing how tough she is. did you do any treatment for Rosie? i read a lot about benadryl (sp)

From now on there will be Benadryl in our medicine cabinet. Help yourself whenever anyone needs it!
